Celebrating 80 Years of Service The Maddox Shop takes its name from Peggy Maddox, the pioneering businesswoman who founded the original store in 1934. With 10 years of early training at the surgical department at Skillern’s, Peggy opened the first shop (known as The Peggy Maddox Shop) in her home, specializing in handmade surgical garments, back braces, abdominal belts, corsets and girdles for polio victims. She then moved the store to the Medical Arts building downtown and later to Oak Lawn, where she added a new service—making braces for children with polio. After serving in the US Navy, Peggy’s daughter-in-law Doris Maddox went to work in the store in 1950. She learned alongside Peggy, becoming deeply involved in day-to-day operations and eventually taking over the business in 1960. Doris moved the store to Casa Linda Plaza in 1961, and in 1964, officially changed the name to The Maddox Shop. The business grew quickly, as many local physicians began referring their patients to take advantage of the shop’s special breast prosthesis and custom undergarment services. Eventually the shop outgrew its original space and moved a few doors down to the current location in Casa Linda Plaza. Over the years, as fashions and tastes have changed, The Maddox Shop evolved to meet the needs of customers, expanding the product line to include a full selection of foundation garments, fashion intimates and lingerie. Peggy Maddox passed away in 1980 at the age of 103, but her legacy of service never left the shop. In the late 1980s, Doris Maddox retired and sold the business her CPA of 30 years, who continues to run the store today. Their team includes an expert staff of sales associates, fitters and seamstresses, many of whom have been working at the store for a decade or more. In fact, The Maddox Shop’s longest-tenured employee, has been with the store since 1967!
