Our Story
Building the Proof of Concept
Building a proof-of-concept model has its challenges, but I firmly believe we’re on the right track—and our clients are proving it every day.
Twenty years ago, I found myself repeatedly seated next to the President of Tom James Company. If you’re not familiar, Tom James started in 1966 and did over $850 million last year as a privately held company. At the time, the President was commuting weekly between his farm outside Tulsa and Chicago.
Back then, I owned a logistics company and traveled to Chicago quarterly. Over a five-year period, we ended up side by side in first class multiple times. Each conversation was a masterclass in his business model—one that fascinated me:
High margins
No inventory
No receivables (you got paid upfront)
Commission-only salespeople
And, maybe best of all, a business that made people feel good about themselves
It was the polar opposite of my logistics world—$5 million in monthly receivables, thin 15% margins, constant cash flow pressure despite $50+ million in revenue, and the “you’re only as good as your last job” reality. It was, frankly, a dog-eat-dog world.
Full Circle
Fast forward twenty years, and I had the opportunity to step into the very model I admired. Tom James was known for suits and business wear, so that’s where I started—launching in Fort Worth, TX, the 12th-largest city in the country.
The immediate reality check? Hardly anyone wore suits anymore. Even my attorney’s office had traded them for button-downs and khakis. One even wore jeans and boots to work. “Fort Worth formal,” as I came to call it, meant a sport coat, nice jeans, and clean boots.
A Change in Direction
In 2023, we moved back to Fairhope, AL, to be closer to my wife’s aging parents. Fairhope is a beautiful town across the Bay from Mobile, but from a dress perspective, it was even more casual than Fort Worth. Custom clothing alone wasn’t going to make the business work.
But I noticed something else: very few options for men to shop. Malls were dying, specialty shops had minimal selection, and one of Mobile’s oldest men’s stores had just closed after 100 years.
Around this time, I started seeing intriguing menswear brands on Instagram—Twillory, Criquet, Donald Pliner, Druh Life, Mack Weldon. They weren’t household names, but their products were sharp. I also noticed that every guy in town seemed to be wearing Peter Millar five-pocket pants. Several of these newer brands offered nearly identical products—often at better prices.
So I reached out to these companies and began building a curated selection for my clients. Our model shifted from strictly custom to custom + convenience—a one-stop shop where we bring premium brands to your home or office. Along the way, we added custom jeans, which quickly became a client favorite.
Why It Works
Our clients love the brands, they love the fit, and above all—they love the convenience. Even off-the-shelf purchases are tailored by our alterations team to fit perfectly. We’ve evolved into a made-to-measure/convenience hybrid: the easiest way to buy men’s clothes in Southern Alabama.
It’s still wild to think that a handful of random conversations in first class—two decades ago—would plant the seeds for my next business.
