Who's Buying Small Businesses Today?

Bar chart highlighting majority of buyers in business market are first-time buyers.

As business ownership continues to attract entrepreneurs and professionals from a variety of backgrounds, understanding today's buyer is becoming increasingly important. Recent BizBuySell survey data provides a snapshot of the individuals currently exploring business acquisition opportunities, including their backgrounds, motivations, and priorities.

The survey reveals a diverse buyer pool, with many respondents pursuing business ownership for the first time.

Many Buyers Are First-Time Business Owners

The latest BizBuySell Insight Report found that 54% of prospective buyers have never owned a business before, while 46% have previous ownership experience.

For many respondents, acquiring a business represents their first experience with the acquisition process. As they evaluate opportunities, these buyers are becoming familiar with concepts such as due diligence, seller's discretionary earnings (SDE), financing options, and purchase negotiations.

The results highlight the variety of paths people take to business ownership. While some buyers have experience running a business, many are pursuing entrepreneurship through acquisition for the first time.

Business Ownership Appeals to Corporate Professionals

Many prospective buyers are transitioning from traditional employment to business ownership. Nearly half of respondents (46%) identified themselves as "corporate refugees," a survey category describing professionals moving from corporate careers into business ownership.

Many of these buyers also bring significant professional experience. Among respondents who identified as corporate refugees, 47% previously worked for organizations with more than 500 employees, while another 13% came from companies with 100–500 employees.

The survey also found that buyers are most commonly between the ages of 40 and 59, representing 59% of respondents.

Taken together, the data paints a picture of buyers who bring experience managing teams, budgets, and day-to-day operations. For many, acquiring an established business represents an opportunity to apply those skills while gaining greater independence and control over their future.

Why Buyers Are Entering the Market

For many prospective buyers, the decision to pursue business ownership is driven by both personal and market-related factors. When asked why now is the right time to purchase a business, 46% of respondents said they want to leave their current job and gain more independence.

Additional factors influencing buyer interest include:

While motivations vary, the survey shows that many buyers are looking for greater control over their professional future and the opportunity to own an established business.

Buyers Prioritize Stability and Profitability

While buyers enter the market with different backgrounds and motivations, many share similar acquisition priorities.

Eighty-six percent of prospective buyers identified stable, recession-resistant businesses as the most desirable opportunities in today's market. Additionally, 64% expressed interest in businesses that are already performing well.

When evaluating a specific acquisition opportunity, buyers ranked profitability as the most important factor, followed by growth potential and industry stability.

Buyers appear to be focused on businesses with established operations, consistent financial performance, and long-term stability.

SBA Financing Continues to Play a Major Role

Financing remains an important consideration for prospective buyers. Seventy-eight percent of respondents are considering Small Business Administration (SBA) financing as part of their acquisition strategy. Additionally, 64% said SBA eligibility is extremely or very important when evaluating a business opportunity.

Seller financing also remains a popular option, with 70% of buyers indicating they would consider it as part of a transaction. Approximately half of respondents reported plans to use personal savings to help fund an acquisition.

Buyer Interest Is Concentrated in Large Markets

Buyer interest remains concentrated in several of the nation's largest states. California led the survey at 15%, followed by Florida and Texas at 9% each.

These states accounted for the highest levels of buyer interest among survey respondents.
