Manufacturing Company wooden, plastic and metal inspection fixtures.

Emmet County, MI

The Company is a small organization focused on customer service. Their practice is to work with our customers as if they were part of their engineering and quality teams. They often join their customers when they meet with their customers to discuss design and quality requirements and issues and to develop gage design criteria. They are often the first people to try to use customer data to create a physical product and often find conflicts between math data and customer prints, or conditions that exist in the math data that simply cannot be recreated in the real world. They focus on altering the customer early in the design / build process in an effort to avoid the cost of changes down the road when delivery times become compressed. Having been associated with the auto business for more than 40 years, they understand how the part and tooling design processes work and are comfortable working directly with Ford, GM and other personnel to help to build better products. The company has delivered their gages to many countries including Mexico, Canada, Poland, China, Spain, and Australia. They are very familiar with export processes. They are located in Michigan, close to Lake Michigan, ski resorts, airports and a Major Highway. With the great service that UPS, FedEx and various LTL freight haulers provide we generally ship to all of Michigan, the northern half of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois overnight. They are also near the many tubing fabricators and bender builders that have set up shop in Michigan. They have a long history of serving our customers well from this great location. Products. The company-produced fixtures are accurate, robust and well finished. All of their details are CNC cut, enabling them to build fixtures with the best accuracy in the industry. They use composites that are much more dense and wear resistant than mahogany or tan and pink-ish composites used by many fixture builders. Most of their fixtures are built with gray tooling board with a density of 850g/m3. When fixtures that are more durable are needed, we use a green board with a density of 1200g/m3 and for severe service; we use a very tough board with a density of 1600g/m3. The troughs in our envelope or tunnel gages are CNC cut using either ball end mills ground to the trough size or CAM software generated toolpath with step over distances set to ensure that the scallop height in the troughs or tunnels is undetectable when CMM probed with an Ø2.00mm stylus. The scallop height in the troughs of some of our competitors gages is too large to allow repeatable cylinder construction when probing with a CMM .They have convinced the industry that probing pins inserted in holes at theoretical tube segment intersections will tell the user that the trough centerlines are cut correctly and the troughs are sized correctly. The only thing one learns when probing pins at theoretical intersection points is where the pins are located -- they learn nothing about the geometry of the trough that is supposed to verify tube shape. The Company specifically focuses on the small diameter tubing fabrication. They design and build wooden, plastic composite, aluminum and steel inspection fixtures, mostly for the automotive industry. As part of the fixture design process, they also alert our customers to errors or potential technical problems found in the part drawings or math models. The Company has an ISO17025 registered Coordinate Measuring Machine lab that is certified to inspect our own products and to do contract dimensional inspection of items from others. THE COMPANY is a year round business, operating on a 40-hour week, 5 days a week with three full time workers. The owner/ product designer has traditionally worked 40-60 hours per week. With our current staff, we are able to turn out about $8500 of gage product per 40-hour week. THE COMPANY has on hand approximately $10,000 of premade "standard" gage metal details, $3500 of lumber and composite, $3000 of assorted tool steel and aluminum and $2000 of purchased items such as dowels, fasteners and clamps. The engineer and toolmaker typically work 40 hours per week. Challenge: A bottleneck in today’s operations occurs at the design part of the process. Due to the availability of only one designer, it limits the ability to keep up with demand from the shop floor. Solution: THE COMPANY feels that one good designer familiar with contemporary software, along with a capable trainee for simpler tasks and detail work, can significantly influence the company’s ability to meet production demands resulting in increased revenue. As well, it will probably be wise to hire a laborer to do some of the unskilled work that today’s staff handles- thus freeing up the designer and trainee to focus on income producing activities.
