Overview

Even though it’s the fifth-largest pizza chain in the U.S., Papa Murphy’s does pizza in a way that’s totally different than most competitors. It creates made-from-scratch pizzas that customers take home to bake in their ovens. In 2016, the brand landed the Market Force #1 spot for America’s favorite pizza, and it has also received top accolades from Consumer Reports, Zagat and Nation’s Restaurant News.

What makes Papa Murphy’s popular is its focus on freshly chopped ingredients and handmade dough. All of the gourmet veggies and meats are cut by hand, the cheese is grated every day in the store and dough is prepared from scratch. Customers can choose from signature pizzas or design their own pies over the phone or via an online ordering app.

Papa Murphy’s take-and-bake pizzas are easy to customize with different types of crust and toppings, from thick Chicago-style stuffed pizzas to gluten-free options. Real garlic, whole-milk mozzarella, high-quality cheddar, fresh bacon, non-GMO grilled chicken and Roma tomatoes are just a few possibilities when ordering. Other family favorites are the gooey chocolate dessert pizza and freshly made chocolate chip cookie dough.

Why Choose Us?

The unique business model of Papa Murphy’s provides its greatest strength for potential franchisees. Because the franchise makes pizza from scratch but doesn’t bake it in house, owners don’t have to worry about equipment such as industrial ovens. There are no dining areas either, so the total restaurant footprint is smaller than traditional pizza places. This reduces initial investment costs significantly.

Having consumers bake their own pizza makes unit sales dependent on local market factors. Where working moms and dads value healthy ingredients but don’t have time to cook, Papa Murphy’s is an ideal solution. The brand’s dedication to the best ingredients and gluten-free options appeals to people interested in healthier eating and convenience. Not all markets provide delivery service, which may require homeowners to pick up their pizza on the way home from work.

Papa Murphy’s may also be an excellent fit for U.S. veterans. It scored high in the Forbes 10 Top Military-Friendly Franchises for cutting royalties by more than half for veterans. Service personnel only have to pay 2% royalties for the first three years in business.

The 2019 merger between Papa Murphy’s and MTY Food Group, Inc. gives the franchise additional capital backing and powerful industry resources. MTY Food Group also owns well-known chains such as TCBY Frozen Yogurt, Planet Smoothie and Cold Stone Creamery.

Ideal Candidate

Potential franchisees must meet the minimum liquid capital and net worth requirements, in addition to having a credit score of at least 650 and a solid financial history. The more previous experience candidates have as entrepreneurs or franchisees, the more likely it is for their application to be approved. At minimum, interested individuals should have business ownership experience.

Papa Murphy’s requires full-time management of its locations, so it should be the sole focus of potential franchisees. On a personal level, the brand is looking for friendly owners who love people and pizza and feel a deep commitment to making incredible pizza every time. No prior food preparation experience is required, however.

History

The very first Papa Murphy’s location wasn’t a Papa Murphy’s at all. Instead, the brand first launched as Papa Aldo’s in Hillsboro, Oregon. That was in 1981. Multiple Papa Aldo’s locations expanded the franchise until 1995, when the chain merged with Murphy’s Pizza – forming the well-known Papa Murphy’s that exists today.

By 1999, Papa Murphy’s had 500 locations around the United States. Now, after more than 35 years in business, Papa Murphy’s has grown to over 1,400 locations in the U.S., Canada and overseas.

Training And Support
