History

Our story

The year was 1902, and a young, enthusiastic Arthur Abbott was hard at work. He was traveling with the carnivals along the Eastern Seaboard, spending his days entertaining the public and his nights perfecting a secret recipe for a special frozen dessert. As he moved from state to state with the carnival, Arthur recognized the importance of community and his passion for making people happy could become the focus of a new business. These principles, combined with his frozen concoction became the foundation of Abbott’s Frozen Custard. Eventually Arthur found his way to the port town of Rochester, New York. Hoping to share his delicious dessert with a community he found to be very special, he opened up a frozen custard stand right across the street from Charlotte Beach on the shores of Lake Ontario.

As word spread of Arthur’s handcrafted frozen concoction, people would line up from morning ‘til night to enjoy what had now become known as Abbott’s Frozen Custard. As Arthur neared retirement, he met a young couple, Leonard and Thelma Schreiber. They loved Abbott’s Frozen Custard as much as Arthur and he knew he had found the right family to share his secret recipe with and carry on the Abbott’s legacy. While the original Abbott’s stand continues to serve the Rochester community, Abbott’s Frozen Custard has gained prominence as a nationally recognized family brand dedicated to its communities. Abbott’s has since added new locations in neighborhoods near and far. From our first stand at the Playland in Rye Beach, New York, Abbott’s Frozen Custard has grown into a multi-location family business with stands from New York to Florida.

Training And Support

Abbott’s owners benefit from an experienced and dedicated management team supporting them in each facet of their business. The support starts even before a franchise agreement is signed as prospective franchisees are walked through our Discovery Process which is designed to ensure the right information in the right sequence is shared amongst everyone. Once a franchisee agreement is signed the Abbott’s team leads our new owner through the onboarding process which includes the following sub-processes. Each step of the process is performed together as one cohesive unit focused on our achieving our collective goal of opening and operating your Abbott’s Stand.

  • Onboarding - Introducing you to our systems and internal processes efficiently is key to ensuring you have time to learn and become proficient before opening.
  • Site selection - We utilize data analytics combined with local knowledge and experience to ensure we identify the best location.
  • Architectural design - Our architectural firm will design your space from top to bottom to ensure it fits our needs.
  • Construction management - We will help you identify, interview, and manage your general contractor performing the construction of your Stand
  • Equipment - Abbott’s will supply you with every piece of equipment you need to operate your stand including our custom made frozen custard machine.
  • Inventory - We leverage our long term established relationships with our ingredient manufacturers to ensure you receive your inventory at below market costs. A number of our ingredients are also made just for Abbott’s to ensure a premium and differentiable product for our guests.
  • Scoop School - Our training program consists of a week at our headquarters as well as over a week at your new Stand prior to and extending through your grand opening to ensure you are fully prepared to operate your business.
  • Marketing - You will receive direct marketing support from our team as well as coaching on how to effectively introduce the brand to your community.
  • Ongoing business coaching - We continually support our owners through various avenues including multiple in person visits during a year to ensure we are helping you operate your business.
