The ice vending industry got started in 2003 and the reason why is if you want a bag of ice you have to go a grocery store, or a convenience store, or a gas station and they get their ice from some truck that trucks it in from some Ice making plant 50 to 100 or more miles away. Ice is heavy and diesel is expensive so this business model which has been around for decades, really doesn’t work any longer. So disruptive technology was introduced by the way of an automated ice vending machine. This machine can make and bag ice in seconds and do it for a cost as low as 50 cents per bag. That is everything except the cost of your machine. Your rent space, utilities, insurance, maintenance, everything. In addition, they will dispense pure water in bulk for the large demographic that likes to bring their 1 or 5 gallon jugs to get pure water at a lower price then delivered. Operationally, there is an icemaker on top that fills a large ice bin below till it is full. When someone puts money in or swipes a credit card the ice from the bin is augured into a bag being blown open by a big blower. Once it reaches its weight a sensor trips everything off and the floor the bag is sitting on drops down and the bag of ice falls into the collector for the customer to pick up in as fast as 15 seconds. Fresh, clean, Untouched by human hands and you do not have to bang it on the ground to break it up.

Imagine, stores sell a 20 pound bag for say $5.00 plus tax or more in S. CA. If it costs us $0.50 to make a bag of ice and we would sell it for $5.00 you can see the margins are quite high and that is why people like this business. OR.. really drive up volume by selling the ice for less then the stores!

The packaged ice industry is large and stable with estimated revenue at retail of $4 billion dollars.There are 11 demographic groups, 4 “Superusers” that buy ice and water. These people will literally drive miles out of their way to buy ice and water out of the machine, because of the price, convenience AND they know when hey get there it will actually have ice because the stores run out. These machines typically sell between 15,000-30,000 bags per year. Bulk water customers typically have the same profile, with stronger demand in geographies where local water quality is relatively poor. It is common for daily water sales to range between 50 and 500 gallons.

We compete primarily with packaged ice sold through traditional retail channels such as supermarkets, convenience stores, and gas stations. Ice purchased through these channels is typically selected from an in-store freezer or ‘bunker’ merchandiser that may be located in-store or outside, and paid for at the cashier. Not only can they not compete with the price (costs less then $0.50 to make a bag of ice) but the 24/7 access convenience is unbeatable.
