We have resided in the same strip shopping center in south Boulder for 28 years, This has been advantageous for our customer base. The Exterior of the shopping center itself underwent a 3,000,000 remodel which was completed last year. We have newer tenants that have breathed even more life into it and who bring a more diverse mix of customers to shop and eat in restaurants. We have just about everything our south Boulder community could need, but we also draw customers from all over Boulder and Denver, Golden and other towns in the foothills. We offer so many unique items because of our used equipment and we have a huge radius from which to draw.
A huge pro is that the community maintains good health and therefore, in general, a more postive attitude. A lot of new people are moving to the area - a big pro for the market- because of the active, outdoor lifestyle. Our customer base knows their gear and have lots of quality gear. They also want the latest technology and need us as an outlet to upgrade. A con is the cost of living in Boulder is high and wages have had to increase to keep abreast. That sometimes narrows the employment pool in that $11-$15 job market. There is a major university which helps in hiring in that wage range but the challenge is finding long term employees.
Growth & Expansion:
The business could be expanded by continuing to offer service sales. We currently sharpen skates, release check skis and are in the early stages of ski tuning. We also offer some bike tuning. All of these services can be greatly expanded. Rentals are also a great opportunity to expand the business. We currently rent snowshoes and paddle boards. We have also considered expanding that to include bike and ski rentals. A con to all of this is staffing and finding long term employees at the pay rate. If the owner can stay in the business that would increase profitability and the necessity for long term employees.
Support & Training:
Training required and provided by franchisor after purchase of store is completed. On-going franchisor support includes advertising, marketing, merchandising, inventory and financial management. Additional training and education opportunities available at the annual franchisee conference, trade show and regional meetings. In store support is provided through Field Operations Managers through field visits and regular conference calls, meetings, texts and emails. New Product Buying Group is available to assist with assortment planning, sourcing new inventory and more. Franchisor may require an additional investment in working capital and brand standard upgrades.
