Selling or buying a business can be a very rewarding experience. Unfortunately, it can also be a very emotional experience. Sometimes "life events" occur outside of the control of the owner which forces the sale of a business. Sometime owner burnout motivates an owner to sell. Neither of these two impetus is optimal for the seller. If the owner did not prepare ahead of time, often a business is sold at a fire sale price. Sometimes the business cannot be sold at all. Research tells us that only 20% of all businesses are ever sold. 1% are passed down from one generation to the next. A full 79% of businesses are ultimately simply closed. Not coincidentally, only 20% of all business owners have an exit plan, a thoroughly thought out and documented plan to grow and sell the business if and when the owner desires it is time. Our approach to selling a business is to ideally try and find multiple strategic potential buyers, other companies or individuals whose existing strengths can exploit and leverage the unique characteristics of the business that is for sale. Done optimally, a transaction results in a higher sales price for the listed business as well as a faster, and greater leveraged return on the purchase price for the acquiring entity. Unlike some business brokerage firms, we do co-broke with other business brokers. In that way our clients get maximum exposure to potential buyers.
