About Me

Island Business Brokerage & Advisory was formed to provide South Carolina and the Low Country of SC, in particular, with the most professional and in-depth services for business brokerage, business advisory and financing for business owners/operators and business buyers. We are made up of three individuals with vastly different business and professional experiences that can benefit any individual or group in need of our offered services. The founder, Richard Sonberg, has a background in engineering, law and oil & gas exploration, along with a number of other entrepreneurial ventures. For over 30 years he practiced corporation law, securities law and oil & gas law. In addition, he organized and managed three independent oil & gas exploration copmpanies, which translates to experience in organizing new large scale ventures and raising private equity. In the 1970s, he was an active owner of the St. Louis Cardinal's Triple-A baseball team in Tulsa, and in 1983 he helped organize and manage the minor league baseball team in Savannah, GA that is now the Savannah Sand Gnats. His experience is vast and his services can be of value to a range of business owners--novice-to-expert. Steve Colburn brings invaluable experience and knowledge of both the business brokerage and financing industry. Over the past 15 years Steve has helped facilitate the sale of over 200 businesses from a full spectrum of industries. Steve, also, has a wealth of management experience and advisory expertise that he brings to business brokerage. He has a unique knowledge of the day-to-day operation of small businesses, positioning him to offer valuable insight to the challenges business owners might face and how to manage them successfully. He has been actively involved in conducting retained aqcuisition searches on behalf of private equity groups (PEGS), individual investors and existing businesses looking for strategic acquisitions. Prior to becoming involved in business brokerage he founded and managed a company that specialized in providing consulting and financing to small businesses. His initial business experience was as a commercial loan officer and regional sales manager for commercial banks where he was consistently awarded for his top production. Steve has been asked to speak, too, and has trained dozens of business brokers in the areas of deal structuring, financing, documenting seller addbacks, managing the business brokerage processand eliminating surprises while closing deals quickly. Gus Sonberg brings 13 years experience as a small business owner/operator in the watersports/marina/boat industry. Further, he holds a MS in Global Supply Chain Management with 5 years corporate experience in global logistics and procurement/sourcing for new product introduction in both the telecom and automotive industries. His skills amassed as a supply chain manager/project maanger will be of value in assessing business strength/weakneses and advising of cost-effective strategies to get businesses to the next level. Overall, we look forward to the opportunity to work with individuals and groups who are in need of a skilled, professional business intermediary, financing options and/or strategic business advice. Lastly, we can coordinate with your trusted advisors, such as attorneys, CPAs, insurance agents, other business brokers and finacers to provide a roadmap for your business solution.
