Poll: Majority of Small Business Owners and Potential Buyers Continue to Support Trump Administration

New BizBuySell survey reveals the small business community agrees with many of Trump's plans

SAN FRANCISCO – June 2, 2017 - BizBuySell, the Internet's largest business-for-sale marketplace, surveyed more than 500 small business owners and prospective buyers to determine approval of Trump's presidency since he took office. The survey examined where small business owners stand on a variety of issues, including how the proposed tax, healthcare, and immigration plans could impact their success. In two separate surveys, as outlined below, BizBuySell found small businesses continue to support the majority of the Trump administration's decisions thus far.

Small business owner survey (344 respondents):


How would you rate President's Trump first 100 days in office?

  • Very successful - 14%
  • Mostly successful - 38%
  • Mostly unsuccessful - 25%
  • Not at all successful - 24%

Top three responsibilities small business owners believe President's Trump has done well so far:

  • Addressing national security - 40%
  • Increasing military spending and expanding the Armed Forces - 37%
  • Handling immigration and border control issues - 35%

Top three issues small business owners believe President's Trump has handled poorly so far:

  • Addressing healthcare issues - 45%
  • Handling foreign affairs - 35%
  • Assembling a strong cabinet – 33%

Do you understand what components are included in the Republican healthcare replacement bill (American Health Care Act)?

  • Yes - 52%
  • No - 48%

Do you support the Republican healthcare replacement bill (American Health Care Act)?

  • Yes - 45%
  • No - 55%

Of those in favor of the American Health Care Act, the top three aspects they support are:

  • Elimination of the requirement to buy insurance through marketplaces created by Obamacare - 75%
  • Elimination of the tax penalty on individuals without adequate health insurance coverage - 74%
  • The absence of the individual or employer mandate - 62%

Of those not in favor of the American Health Care Act, the top three aspects they're against are:

  • State waivers to opt out of regulations and consumer protections that were included in Obamacare, meaning states can allow insurers to charge more for patients with pre-existing conditions - 54%
  • Phased out expansion of Medicaid - 50%
  • Elimination of the income-based tax credits and subsidies available under Obamacare - 43%

Are you in favor of President Trump's "Buy, Hire American" executive order, which will require the government to review its current H-1B visa program?

  • Yes – 70%
  • No – 30%

Do you support President's Trump's proposed tax plan?

  • Yes – 85%
  • No – 15%

Are you optimistic that President's Trump's tax proposal will pass through Congress?

  • Yes - 49%
  • No - 51%

If President's Trump's tax plan passes, will it affect your decision to sell your business, invest in your current business, or acquire additional businesses?

  • More likely to sell my business – 10%
  • More likely to invest in my business – 25%
  • More likely to acquire an additional business – 21%
  • No effect on my future plans – 44%

Do you support President's Trump's push for increased immigration crackdowns and deportations?

  • Yes – 59%
  • No – 28%
  • No opinion – 13%

How has your small business been affected by the increased immigration crackdowns and deportations?

  • Positively – 6%
  • Negatively – 12%
  • No impact – 82%

Would your business benefit from renegotiating NAFTA?

  • Yes – 9%
  • No – 46%
  • Unsure – 45%

A third (36%) of owners would not like to see the NAFTA trade deal renegotiated, while 31% want an increase in tariffs on both Mexican and Canadian goods, and 20% want to pull out completely.

Of those in favor of the American Health Care Act, the top three aspects buyers support are:

  • The absence of the individual or employer mandate - 58%
  • Elimination of the requirement to buy insurance through marketplaces - 58%
  • Elimination of the tax penalty on individuals without adequate coverage - 56%

Of those against the American Health Care Act, the top three aspects buyers do not support are:

  • Phased out expansion of Medicaid - 62%
  • State waivers to opt out of regulations and consumer protections that were included in Obamacare, meaning states can allow insurers to charge more for patients with pre-existing conditions - 60%
  • Elimination of the income-based tax credits and subsidies - 42%
