The biggest expense is paying rent all year round even though there is not much business in the summer. The income season is only four months long, but once the rent is covered most of the additional income is profit. Other than advertising is little other expense. Maintenance costs are extremely low. Running the machines and the expenses of teaching cost almost nothing unless you have hire an instructor instead of teaching yourself. You only need about 600 square feet for two machines, and could get by with less.
If you are not ready to commit to a full time business in a commercial location you could set up one or two of these machines in your garage, or some other storage area like a barn or metal shed. I have seriously considered keeping the machines in my garage and rolling them out for lessons (they are on wheels). With no monthly payment for rent you have virtually no expenses other than advertising and can make good money just using them on weekends
I personally do not write very much off other than the usual items people who own small businesses write off, Other people who own or work at similar businesses write off a lot more. For example, they will arrange to meet a client on the slopes every time they go skiing or boarding, charge them for a lesson, and then write off the entire day's expenses including gas, food and lift ticket. Other people get more aggressive and write off their equipment, trips to Colorado and Utah and all their other skiing expenses. I would not recommend doing that, but some people do.
