Great question. It does range, but you might also consider if there is an up front retainer. We offer an upfront retainer and reduce the commission. There are many compensation models. They key is to find the right broker for you. I find you often get what you pay for.

Here's an article about business brokers including how they work and what they charge for their services:

I charge 10% and its never negotiable. why? I sold 4 businesses this year that were listed with other brokers for 5%. the sellers were so focused on getting the best deal on commission that they went with whoever would give them the lowest. Then later they find me and we sell the business close to asking price. My payment is already performance based, so go with a broker that performs!

Kent, as a Broker, legally I cannot answer that question in a more direct way. Moreover, it is important that the reader understand that it is a negotiable issue, which is something I did flatly state. Thanks for you kind words and understanding.

6 to 10% should be close. How is that for an answer vs non-answer jibberish.

All Brokers' commissions are freely negotiated between the Seller and the Broker. The vary widely, across the Country. Some are more willing than others, to negotiate rates. Some require up-front fees, while others do not. Some apply their commission rates to the value of the Inventory, were applicable; others do not. Most small Business Brokers operate on a percentage of the Sale Price, while a few others will charge a flat fee. You need to speak to individual Brokers about what they would individually charge.
