sold, but not marked sold, businesses.

Don't the listor's have an obligation to remove, or at least mark, the businesses sold, so searchers don't have to waste time jumping through the hoops only to be disappointed?

Absolutely! As Brokers, we take that responsibility seriously. Unfortunately, with the number of listing systems, particularly with the growth of the Internet, some listings get missed. One of the of the premier Real Estate listing systems has routine reminders it sends to Agents and Brokers, periodically asking whether the listing should be renewed or taken off the market. If you do not respond within thirty (30) days, it is taken of the market. I had asked BizBuySell some time ago to do the same, but to date, nothing has happened.

There is also the chance that some Brokers leave those listings open, in order to generate a larger number of names of Buyers. Not a good practice, in my view. You can develope more ill will than you potentially can in positives, through that kind of practice.
