A shelf corp is a corp that was created and never used. It was created and then placed on a "shelf" to gather dust so to speak. Kind of like making a notebook cover and never writing in it.

Many people try to sell them for a much greater value than the $100 to $600 that they usually cost to create. Some unethical people will create several "shelf" corps and have them do "business" with each other and provide the "business" information to credit companies as a way to establish a credit record. This is a scam they use to make the corp look credit worthy and tell you it has a much greater value and that you will be able to borrow large sums of money if you buy their "Shelf Corp".

Be very careful if you are buying a shelf corp because you are told "it has an excellent credit rating and that will enable you to borrow money."
