Have 2 times as much money as you think you need in reserves. So let's say you have $200,000 in cash, the maximum business I would advise a client to buy would be in the $100,000 range, assuming approximately $50,000 in costs per year. That way even if the business tanks after the owner leaves, you (the buyer) aren't as good as you think you are in the business purchased, the books and records were erroneous, whatever, the first 24 months' of expenses you have covered and you can get past the growing pains.
