What are some of the things I should be checking regularly in terms of my finances?

I am a small business owner -- quite small. I don't currently have an accountant as it is an expense that I am trying to avoid at the moment. Any input would be welcomed.

I am a CPA, and most smaller businesses do NOT need an "accountant to keep their books... you might consider taking a class on accounting and keep your own. I would ask an accountant to prepare your tax return as often a Company can miss the boat... and the IRS is not very forgiving.

I have seen the situation where a CPA would set up your record keeping in Quickbooks and offer guidance on processes... and of course prepare their return. Just a thought.

Hiring a good book keeper is much cheaper and will provide you the same data as an accountant. You mostly need to evaluate your bottom line to ensure that your profit margins are in line and you are therefore making money and not just running it through the bank. Also, you need to watch your companies credit scores. I offer a very inexpensive service that monitors the financial health of your company.
