Looking to buy or start a business

Worked for "the man" for 30 years and now have about $100k available and ready for a change. Very low monthly expenses and credit score over 800. I've been working as a manufacturing department leader for over 15 years so good with money management, budgets and personnel. Suggestions: buy a business, start a business or look at a franchise??

I can build, operate and transfer an online retail business in the US. I have products which can be sold on Amazon US marketplace. I have established a source for fulfilling the orders and the products are directly delivered to the customers.

I also have a method of adding new products to the inventory which will further give you a growth year on year.

This business model can be replicated to other markets such as UK, Spain, France, Italy, Germany,Canada, China and Japan.

I can manage this business on a partnership basis since I have experience operating successful stores on Amazon in the past.

We can share the profits as they generate so there is minimum risk involved.

All that is required from the partner is

-a registered trading company in the US with bank account and US tax ID number,
-a small credit line to operate the business.

An NDA and a MOU can be signed to get started.

Please feel free to contact me on galaxystores@outlook.com

Have you considered owning a Florida based business. I own a spa in Pembroke Pines, FL (about 30 mins north of Miami). It is a new business still in its growth phase, but military commitments preclude me from devoting the time necessary to properly run the business. I am interested in a quick sale to include all assets of the business. The Spa is fully up and running to include staff, equipment and supplies (please see web reference for detail). Please call if interested: 619-663-7657.

Make sure the franchise you pick is right for you. We own a small business and have several business friends with franchises. They tend to hit you with lots of small hidden fees. Many food franchises force you to buy all products down to straws through them at a set price even if you can get them for less elsewhere. They will also make you follow their pricing and offer free kids meals etc., and decrease your margin if any. Be careful.

Frank,

Congrats on the initative. That is usually the hardest part about starting a new business endeavor. It would depend on which industry you're interested. There are plenty of franchises as mentioned earlier or buying an existing business. This is a buyers market and timing is everything. Many business owners are looking to get out and start different endeavors. It also depends on where you are looking to invest. If you're staying in Arlington it would be different then moving somewhere else. Hope is all works out for you. If you have anymore question contact us.

If you are starting a business for the first time my advice would be go with a franchise and buy an existing business rather than starting a new one. You will pay a bit more for goodwill; but it's worth it considering the effort involved in starting a business from scratch.

Best wishes...

Frank, We have started 2 businesses and have decided if we do it again, we will buy a business turn key. If you buy the right one, you have a good customer base, and marketing, sales etc. already in place. We are currently looking in to selling a retail business because we are having a baby and will not do a start up again when we are ready to open a new business.

Frank, I suggest you consider existing businesses. Starting a business and even franchising can be expensive and existing businesses offer immediate cash flow with employees in place and depending on the business room from growth with a well established platform. With your investment level now is a great time to buy and your industry experiences qualifies for several businesses we have in light manufacturing, custom lighting, refillable ink manufacturing franchise. I have an answer for you that may help you. Generally Franchises take $250,00 and another $200,000 to have as liquid assest. Try a proven system that is doing well despite recession that will give you continuous guidance and support. See http://www.NuFreedom.com

Frank:

First and foremost, and I believe you understand this, a good franchise is based upon a proven system, and a good franchisor is looking for franchisees with whom they can partner to implement this system at the local/regional level. This being the case, you would not typically enter into this relationship if you beleive the system needed a lot of tweaking.

Now, different franchises do indeed allow for a certain level of innovation at the franchisee level. In fact, the really good franchises are looking for franchisees who can help generate ideas for improving the system, all the while maintaining the team atmosphere. For instance, the groups that make local and national advertising decisions are often overseen by a board comprised of franchisees. These boards will in turn solicit regular input and feedback from the franchisee community.

Franchises do indeed have a strict set of rules, for good reason. A significant amount of time, trial, and error has gone into the business and the brand, and consistency among the individual franchise units is fundamental to the integrity of the brand. More importantly, the franchisor wants its franchisees to be successful, and the system should be the best template for success.

With our clients, one of the (many) areas we evaluate is a match between the prospective franchisee's need for and interest in flexibility and the franchisor's willingness and ability to accommodate them. Ultimately, this is part of the "fit" both parties are looking for.

Great responses and exactly what I was hoping for. Naturally, I'm not in great hurry and researching a franchise sounds like the best way to start. I didn't get where I am by making decisions too quickly.

Just wondering how "strict" franchises are?? Is there normally room for some personal ideas and input?

Yes. Arlington as in the home of the Rangers. (please don't mention the football team)

Business Buyer

Frank,

There are positives and negatives for buying a business and buying a franchise system, I suggest that you look at both. If you are starting either, you need to think about cash flow and the reality of a start up. This usually means money going out at least several months or a couple of years before you get to a place where you can take any cash out.
The reason companies Franchise is this. They can build out their company on other peoples money. They know it takes money to start a business. That does not mean they are bad, but I does mean you need to do you homework and be a Knowledgeable buyer, avoid being sold. We all know people who have done well with Franchises, but again don't get sold.

If you can find an existing business or franchise location with good numbers, you are ahead of the game. You can verify numbers, see growth and determine if there is value in the business that you want to buy, You will be buying cash flow which is one of the critical issues in any small business. You need positive cash flow to be in business next year.

You might want to look at some books on business buying. One author I kind of like is Richard Parker, from Doimo, I do not know him but I have read his blog on another site. He appears thoughtful and straight forward in his writing. http://www.diomo.com.

Best of Luck

Hi Frank.

Eric has given you some great points to consider, and I agree with him.

Another very significant benefit of buying into a GOOD franchise system (and Right at Home is indeed one of these good systems) is the opportunity to reduce your risk of business ownership. By that, I mean you are able to leverage years of research & development, sales and marketing systems, recruiting and training expertise, purchasing power, etc. The franchise provides you a clear blueprint and the support you need to execute effectively. In turn, your ramp-up time in the new business is reduced, and you are well-positioned to out-compete the independent operators in your industry.

You signed "Frank in Arlington." Is that as in "Home of the Rangers?"

Hi Frank, excellent posts below as well. You sound like you've got your "house in order" so to speak. Low monthly expenses, good experience, and good credit. WIth 100k liquid, there are a lot of businesses and franchises that you could get into.

As you begin your search, my suggestion would be to keep an open mind and to seek out businesses that have some resistence to the pressures of this economy. Since I am a franchise guy, I will tell you that based on the info you provided in your question, you would be an attractive candidate for many franchises.

Also, you mentioned you were in manufacturing - if you are an SOP (Standard Operating Procedures) kind of guy, franchising might be a perfect fit for you. If you decide to go the franchising route, make sure to talk to several of the existing franchisees as part of your due diligence. Plan on 30-60 days of research for most franchises. Hope this was helpful.

Eric

I agree with the last poster. Since you are good with money management, budgets and personnel, you would also be good with a business plan. Unless there is a franchise that you are very interested in and think would enjoy doing, I'd start my own business or buy one. If you decide to go that route, contact me at redrobin5@hotmail.com. I have a startup regarding domain reselling, (with 40K in just "premium" domains), a website linking to services through godaddy.com etc. I also have a known dating service that's going out of business after 10 years you could get at an excellent price. Lots of assets. Good Luck.

How to Buy a Business
WA

It really depends on a number of issues including your temperament. I'm a former startup entrepreneur and business broker. I can handle startups and buying a business, but I don't have the temperament for being a franchise owner. I prefer to make my own way and develop my own systems. Others will prefer the the added safety of having to simply follow a 1500 page operations manual.

At your age a startup might be too demanding in terms of hours. No offense there as I have 25 years of business experience myself. We all slow down over the decades. Your best bet may be to buy a good business. Or franchise if you're into ready made systems.
