What kind of business? If it is a liquor store, or some other entity that comes under State/County control, you can check for the business license, sales tax or liquor license to see if it was sold. Depending upon how orgainized the local government may be, that kind of exercise could be easy, or chaotic. But if the business is under contract and in escrow, the only way to check is with the Owner or Broker.

Rebecca, wide open question. I am assuming you can't ask the owner or don't want to for some reason.
You can check with county courthouse to see if there is a public record of the sale. Check with local newspapers, they often have record of business transactions. Or check with neighbors, they often know more than anyone. Or check out Edgemaster Mobile Sharpening, Thanks Jon
