I have $200k in cash ready for a down payment. Any good recommendations?

I've been seeing quite many different businesses, such as GNC stores, wireless stores, ice cream franchises, fast food restuarants. I have so many questions in mind and now I'm even more confused.

Is it now really good time to buy businesses? I saw a wireless franchise whose sales revenue dropped by about 60-70% but somehow seller got a suspicious 77k "other income" on his P&L which made his profits look decent. But I really don't know if I could bet on it. Is it possible that I can start my own wireless franchise (AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon)?

Dan, no matter what the economy, people still like to go out and enjoy a meal once in while. They need to be pampered and taken care of by someone else.

Try a deli and/or diner. It's hard work, but good rewards and fun. Plus in the right area it is an excellent investment that will grow. And you can do this anywhere there are people. We doesn't like to eat great food? Also, have 2 possible locations in Florida under a different name that may be available together or separate.

My first two rules of business are:

1. Always buy a stable, profitable business with high cash flow. Do not attempt a start up unless you can EASILY afford all of the losses. Including your time.

2. Do not buy a franchise. Sometimes they can make sense but 95% of the time they are not worth their cut of the gross.

Most wireless operators resale used cell phones/smart phones to international resellers which probably accounts most of the "other income" (on a cash basis) for this business.

Robert Bruhl:

Health care sounds a good industry. However, I have no knowledge of this kind of business at all. Nor did I ever deal with doctors, nurses or people who need medical/non-medical care. I'm wondering how I could get started and whether it is possible to survive for someone like me.

Daniel, Give some serious thought to the health care industry. Invest your time into the needs of the ageing for a long turn growth business. Nurse regisry and referral, medical equipment rentals, home care workers, transportation etc etc. If this is a long term venture invest where the largest needs will be in the future and beyond Robert E. Daniel, buy a business you like. If you like making widgets, buy a business that makes widgets. Buying a business is more than just dollars. Interview business brokers in your area and work with one you feel comfortable with. They should be able to answer your questions and address your concerns. Good luck to you.

I am a broker and I have a client with a wireless store for sale. I am clearly in this case representing the seller, so I suggest you locate a good CPA and Attorney to assist you in these matters. Now having said that, my client has a two Sprint locations and has monthly residual income stream that you would purchase as part of the deal. The asking price is $250K and some owner financing is available.

FF&E between both location equal $80K (The stores look like corporate locations!)
Present Value of Residual Income Stream $65K
Inventory $20K
Leasehold Improvements $30K
Goodwill $55K

Owner has been in the business since 1997 and would be willing to stay aboard to train you. There is already a professionally trained staff in both sales and service. (One of the locations is a service a Authorized Service and Repair Location) The repair business generated $7,500/mo profit and also helps drive traffic for accessory sales.

Contact me if you have an interest in this client's locations or others. I am here to assist you.

Thanks,

Daniel,
$200k is a good size down payment and you sound like you’ve managed a good search at reviewing opportunities in the market place. Therefore I’m confused that with you buyer profile you are not working with a broker to help evaluate your options. Sales drop of 60-70% and suspicious 77k that you have to bet is not a position I would recommend for my buyers. Yes there are opportunities for starting your own wireless franchise, however this contradicts the goal of buying an existing business and acquiring a turnkey operating with cash flow from the first day you own it. Please call my office at to schedule a complimentary 30 minute buyer consultation at 617-945-5338 or mandoni@sunbeltne.com.

Dan,

I've owned 12 businesses over the years......c-stores seem to be the most recession proof business there is......I've owned 3 different ones and they always made a lot of money. With 200K you can get a very good store for 2.5 -3X net and that would be 150 to 200K in net income/year.....feel free to email me if you have any follow up questions.....I do know of a few that are for sale now if you are willing to locate.......I can only own 1 biz at a time due to maximizing profits.....goldsteinltd@yahoo.com

The more I think over things, the more complicated I make them in my head. That's why I wear Nike, "Just do it". Your never know what might happen tomorrow. So you dont want to take a chance by putting your 200k into a franchise that might close down. History should just matter, but to a point, you can look at all the statistics and the "previous" graphs that they have from "past" and hope for the best in future. I'd put my money into something in which I trust. You should do the same.

Daniel,

I've owned A LOT of different businesses in my lifetime. Right off the top of my head my wine shops were my favorite business, but that's because I like wine, the margins were great and the business is recession proof.

You need to consider also competition and stability. I looked at wireless and decided that it was too risky. And yes, financials can be a joke.

Drop me a line. I'll talk with you for free.

Daniel,

As an owner of several previous businesses, I would offer this for thought. Perhaps you might consider a different approach. Maybe it would be best to take advantage of someone's expertise that needs funding help and become involved with them instead of taking it all on yourself. I have an opportunity on an award winning product that I would like for you to check out. I am set to launch the company and have the experience, just need funding to do so. This is a legitimate business. If you do not want to invest all of your money you have stated, it would not be necessary. I have terms set in place that would accommodate small investments. I have a business plan written. This is a very fast growth and huge profit business that is positioned as a lower priced, better alternative to what is currently on the market. I have received a government grant already, but that does not go very far. I have done the important things to protect the rights to it. My name is Brian and I would like for you to contact me through my website to discuss it.
If this is not right for you, good luck anyway, but keep an open mind to this type of opportunity instead of buying outright.

Daniel,
There's lots of opportunities out there, but first you need to focus on what your own attributes are. First time business owners are usually owner/operators so my advice is to check out Richard Parker's site www.diomosolutions.com and take the Right Biz Profile. One good acquisition will change your future and one bad acquisition will be liking throwing the cash down the toilet. There's no race.

Daniel,
I have sold many wireless stores and at one point represented Sprint and sold their affiliate locations. Wireless business is profitable, but it really depends on location and how much the owner hustles to get business. You have to go out and get business outside your location by contacting businesses and get them signed up, otherwise you only rely on the traffic your location draws. You also need to be a certified repair center if possible, because that is another great revenue stream, however carriers are stingy about that as well. Most carriers decided to go to exclusive stores, so you don't see a great deal of multi-carrier stores, which is a downside. Another downside is that there is a cell phone store on every corner, including large chains like Best Buy, Radio Shack, etc.

In today's economy I feel there are 2 industries that make money auto repair and medical. As long as we drive cars ( and we will always drive cars), those cars need service and now with dealership closing and less people buying cars, there is a great opportunity in this industry and in most cases you can open a shop for $100K or less. Non-Medical homecare Industry is growing rapidly. I have sold several and they make good money. I'll be more than happy to discuss this and other opportunities with you, so please contact me at david@franchiseadvisorygroup.net or 888-241-6629
