Hi Nick

I applaud you wanting to venture into the business world as an entrepreneur and not just executive management. Hope a couple of pointers will help you.

1. Since less than 5% of the population are actually entrepreneurs there is a fine line to examine between a gambler a dreamer and an entrepreneur. If you are not interested in day to day ops then you should not consider buying an actual business. There are few business owners that are interested in taking on a partner with money. A rule of thumb is "money always wants control" I can't help but assume that you would be no different. The conflict arises when an owner agrees to get the deal in order to get the cash (usually desperate) and then the owner of the cash tries to exercise assistance and provide guidance and management to the business. This is the part the owner usually didn't want! However it's usually too late by the time both parties realize that.

2. There are investment banks and companies that provide services to invest your cash into business opportunities and will handle all of it while providing you with a good return. However, you will pay fees for that. Never "need" a good return... do not invest in business what you cannot afford to lose. It's worse than the stock market. If you "need" a good return pick something else.

If you are looking for a partnership where you can contribute as well as supply some cash then I have provided just a few quick ways you can ferret out a problem before signing on the dotted line. As the holder of the cash you will always have people who want it. You need to find out which person you want to be with... that is a greater question.

So... ask questions

1. if you are a CXO then you can read a balance sheet and P&L report. Ask for the documents... if they cannot or will not provide them... well that solves it really early. File that one in the trash. Once you get a copy of these numbers... consider them all fictitious until proven otherwise. Entrepreneurs tend to exaggerate numbers to support the grand size of their vision. Ask questions about line items... what was the money used for, why buy what was bought, whose on the payroll, how many hours do you work... etc. If he crosses his arms and closes up then he is not interested in you or your help, just your money. This will end badly.

2. Look for decisions that were made contrary to your own morals and beliefs. First write out what you believe and then make a list of question accordingly. Such as... so tell me about your family... if family is important and he has a legacy of broken relationships, exwives and children on drugs. He wants your money not your input. Conflict on the horizon.

3. Last freebie... ask him how he came to own the business. Is he a gambler or a business owner. Listen to the story and pick holes in it. Ask about the holes. Start as far back as day one... then when discussing the present work your way back in the time line of events and see what doesn't add up. Liars can't jump around in the story... because there isn't a story. The truth of the matter can be recognized by the way the story is told... if they lie during the solicitation of a partner and money then run away from these guys... conflict on the horizon.

Hope some of this was helpful. Do not presume because you were a successful executive that you automatically are a successful entrepreneur, investor or business owner. Managing a stream of income that is already there with multiple support staff is a totally different skill than starting a line of revenue from nothing without any support at all.
