How much is my website worth?

t depends on many factors that need to be analyzed very carefully such as:

- Sales and Profit numbers and trends
- Traffic numbers and trends
- Age of the business
- Domain name value
- Industry sector trends and outlook
- Business growth potential
- Proprietary or non-proprietary products
- Unique content
- Inventory count (if applicable)
- Advertising methods and costs
- Personnel expertise needed to operate the business
- Seller financing
- Non-compete terms
- … and so much more!

So as you can see, nobody can give you an accurate website appraisal or website valuation based on just scanning your website pages. No-one knows what your website is worth until they've studied it in-depth.

Yes, there are website valuation sites out there that try to provide a specific dollar number. You enter your website URL and a few seconds later, they estimate your Traffic, Sales, and Website Value. It is always incorrect. Use these website valuation tools for fun and nothing els

Recent e-businesses where I've served as counsel for buyer, counsel for an LLC member interested in valuation of their percentage of the business, and as instructor in a University of Chicago Graham School program on e-business development and investment and have had a case to evaluate with my class sold based on things like the following:

-- Cost of customer acquisition (with AdWords, native search, or other means of obtaining site traffic, and measured by number of visitors, percent that turn into buyers, and cost of getting the site up or them to the site);
-- Average amount of sales per visitor;
-- Costs of goods sold and consequent margins per visitor and overall;
-- Profits made over the last 2-3 years, and
-- Prospects for improvements in marketing, profitable product mix, etc...

Proof of ownership of trademarks and websites also helps, as does tax-efficient entity organization (in a state that does not, e.g., tax out of state sourced income) and sales order taking and fulfilment (in a state and locality with no sales tax, or at least none on out of state sales, and in low tax localities if local affiliates in high tax states are at issue.)

In other words, look at your business the way a buyer would, and figure out what it would cost you in money and time to reproduce the sales and profits you have obtained. That is a good indication of your value to third party buyers.

Hope this helps,

Bill Price

Yes many times people THINK they know whats going on but i see so many complex business models day to day where you think one website it making nothing its doing $5,000 a month and others driving thousands of people per day to their site are nearly breaking even. This is why i advise people to never just be a copy cat, you never know whats going on behind the scenes such as lead generation and strategic partnerships.

The website appraisals are completely inaccurate. One will tell you your website is not worth anything and another will tell you it is worth $20000.00.
