How can I know who is the right broker for selling an IT consulting business?

We own a small business, and our service is focused on IT placement and consulting, servicing mainly the Atlanta market. We are interested in selling the business and want to talk to brokers who can help us on that. Can anyone suggest a way to locate the appropriate broker?

Ronnie, one of the ways is simply to look at Brokers who are already listing IT services, like yours. We list and sell a fair number of B-to-B listings, some of which are IT companies, and we are obtaining an LOI on a listing that sounds similar to yours, this week.

Another thing you can do, if you know some of your competition that may have been involved with Brokerages in the past, make some inquiries, if you can do so without compromising your confidentiality. If you can find out who has performed successfully, you may wish to contact that particular Broker.

We spoke to a Restaurant Owner in another state last week, who asked us whether we would list her business for sale. We told her that her kind of business demanded a local Broker; in your situation, a local Broker is not as important, because frequently you will have Buyers from outside your area that will be interested in a business such as yours. We are attracting a Buyer from Kansas City for our listing in Maryland. We are also dealing with a Houston Seller and a Cincinnati Buyer, on another deal.
