Can I force someone who defaulted on the purchase of my business to surrender the dba back to me?

I owner financed my landscaping business for a family member and last week he decided he no longer wanted it and "dumped" it on me. I have contracts to fulfill so I picked up and moved forward. One week later, he has decided he made a mistake and wants it back. I don't accept that. He is refusing to surrender the dba, in fact, he is telling me that I don't have the right to operate under the company name because he "took" it back.
