CORF stands for - Comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Facility – they primarily provide outpatient rehabilitation for Medicare beneficiaries who are injured, disabled, or recovering from illness. CORFs were created 34 years ago by a Congress to provide hospital-type services (except surgery) in an outpatient environment to Medicare beneficiaries and any other private-insurance beneficiaries. CORFs were designed to be privately-owned and separate from hospitals. The outpatient therapy benefit under Part B provides coverage to only outpatient therapy services, such as physical therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, occupational therapy, physicians' services, and social or psychological services. Q. Who can own a CORF? You have to be US citizen, 18 years or older, with a clean background, and no criminal record. Q. How can you own a medical facility without a medical background? You hire staff with strong medical backgrounds. For example, the clinical administrator is an individual you would want to have an extensive medical background. The person who holds this position will insure that the facility complies with all Medicare requirements and interacts with the referral sources. In addition, your CORF must have a medical director. Where do CORF patients come from? Patients are referred to the facility by physicians, insurance companies, hospitals, case management nurses, attorneys, etc. Q. Why do patients choose being treated at a CORF instead of at the local hospital? The number one reason is because they can go home at the end of therapy treatment. Parking is usually simple and easily accessible. Easy scheduling and enrolling process means no waiting periods. There are no long walks involved from parking lot to our facility with CORF therapy.
