Business Description

This school is a private provider of computerized training for general and job oriented business skills. The goal of its courses is to provide training for people who need skills in order to enter or re-enter the workforce.
The company has been in business since 1993 and is located in leased space of approximately 2,000 square feet.
Many of the students have been laid off from other segments of the economy, such as manufacturing, as plants have closed or reduced their workforces. This school provides training to these people in practical computer and other skills that can be used to find employment elsewhere.
This school provides courses that are offered on a learn-at-your-own-pace basis along with some classroom-taught courses.
Generally, the courses offered at this school consist of courses that offer general computer skills, such as courses Microsoft Office, or courses that offer practical skills, such as learning medical coding software. The actual courses are proprietary and have been specifically designed into the curriculum to teach a wide range of practical skills in the areas covered. Many courses include teaching from different sources such as Microsoft Office products as well as specific vocational skills related to the course being taught. For example, a course in Accounting and Bookkeeping

Additionally, there is a small kitchen area in both locations. The lab instructor is positioned in the computer lab at a desk. The second facility has a similar setup, but includes 5 classrooms.
Generally, this business competes on a very localized basis for students as many students do not own automobiles and need to use mass transit to attend classes. The school does have competitors in each location. The biggest differentiating factor that distinguishes this business from others is that most training consists of courses in which the student can learn at his or her own pace. Thus, if a student cannot make it to class on a particular day, he or she will not be penalized or fall behind as they can simply make up the work at a different time. In contrast, a student missing a teacher-instructed class may miss out on learning critical information that was taught on the day of the missed class. (However, all ESL classes are taught in a classroom environment.)
Growth & Expansion:
Management believes that a potential acquirer could substantially grow the business in the following manner: • Expansion of Course Offerings: The Company continues to seek new courses for its students that are appropriate for job skills that will be needed for unemployed workers seeking job skills. • Continued Growth of ESL and GED programs: The City of Lowell contains one of the highest concentrations of Cambodian and other Southeast Asian populations in the United States. Many of these students need services to learn the English language or to provide GED training. The current ownership group has made an effort to grow these program offerings in 2011-2012 and believes that there are continued additional growth opportunities going forward in these areas. (For example, over a 3-year period, the Lawrence campus of the business has grown the ESL/GED program from zero students to over 40 students. The owners believe that this type of growth may be achievable in Lowell as well.) • Market to Individuals. Currently the business does not do any significant marketing to businesses or individuals. An aggressive sales and marketing campaign in combination of outreach efforts to local organizations could boost sales. • Market to Businesses. The business qualifies for Workforce Training Funds which allow businesses of any size in the State of Massachusetts to receive deeply discounted training for employees, partially funded by the State.
