The vendor established this profitable business with other medical and nursing partners in 1999. In 2002 she took over the business and has expanded it to build a solid reputation for delivering high quality training and education across the south west peninsula.

The company has now built a strong niche market and is a unique position of being the sole provider of foundation courses to the NHS in the field of cervical sample taker training in the south west peninsula and Somerset. She also is one of only two Approved Quality providers (AQPs) in Wessex.

This is a three yearly contract to the company and not to the owner. This position involves invitations to attend quarterly NHS cancer screening meetings which is a measure of the regard and the value that the company brings to the NHS.

The vendor’s nursing background enabled her to continue the excellent relationships that had been established within the NHS for many years whilst working in primary care. This led to the company being commissioned by the NHS to provide a range of training solutions that especially focused on primary care. With a group of long serving self employed, regularly used expert consultants, the company delivers a range of courses that address local and national requirements It also has a history of providing funded health education international projects in various countries. The company remains with various international agencies as being available for future short term projects.

Since taking over the company the vendor has expanded the business to provide training outside of the south west to other NHS organisations and this has been enhanced by the development and provision of an online update training programme for cervical sample takers in 2009.

This cost saving initiative for health authorities has opened up the market to areas outside of the south west and requests now come from across the country. Cervical sample taker training is monitored carefully by the Public Health England (PHE) previously known as NHS Regional Quality Assurance Reference Centre and the vendor liaises constantly with laboratory staff and cancer screening staff to ensure safe practice and a reliable service. The vendor currently takes control of this important side of the business. However, this requires a buyer who does not necessarily need to be a health professional but someone who pays attention to detail with good administration skills and with a knowledge of the NHS.

In addition to providing both foundation courses and numerous updates each year in cervical sample taker training, the company also provides a range of essential continuing professional development (CPD) training for primary care staff. Such courses include immunisations, travel health, sexual health and contraception updates that are delivered by its external consultants.

The website was developed by local designers with whom the vendor has a service level agreement. The agreement provides a support system for users of its online learning platform. The owner has streamlined the business by adding an online booking and shopping system via its website and finances are managed via a computerised system.

The same web designers developed the e commerce site that enables course applicants to purchase places via this route which substantially reduces secretarial time. The content of the online programme was developed and the IPR is owned by, the vendor in addition to the IT platform. Any changes to the online programme therefore are easily made. A monthly support contract with another IT company exists for any IT maintenance issues not related to the website or online programme.

A comprehensive customer data base is maintained by a part time secretary who uses it for marketing purposes. Enquiries are received via the website or by telephone. In the absence of the vendor during holiday time, a virtual secretarial service is used and messages e mailed to the secretary.

Customer Service and reputation.
The owner takes pride in its customer service and responds to feedback on its courses, both online and face to face. It aims to respond to enquiries within twenty four hours whenever possible. It is held in high regard by colleagues and other providers and purchasers and laboratory managers. As a result, in 2009 and 2012, the company was the chosen provider for two major pieces of work across the south west peninsula. This was for the national roll out of liquid based cytology training and human papilloma virus training. It won the National Training Award in 2009 over all other individual applicants in the UK. This prestigious award was supported by UK Skills for people who had ‘achieved really outstanding business and personal success through a commitment to training’ In addition, it was short listed for the Born Global award in 2011. The company logo is a registered trade mark.

The business is run from an office at the vendor’s home in order to reduce overhead costs. Naturally allowances of gas, electricity, water, council tax, car expenses and mileage etc are allowed against tax liabilities.
Growth & Expansion:

Support & Training:
Although the owner wishes to retire, she is willing to support / mentor the buyer for a six month to nine month period on part time basis, possibly two days a week either to attend screening meetings and / or facilitate courses and to assist in a smooth transition. Indeed the current owner is willing to continue providing the teaching on a sessional basis during the training period The company continues to expand and the workload and turnover has increased significantly this year due to its long standing high reputation but also changing situations within the NHS.
